What is art? - Context

Constable 1831:
‘Salisbury
Cathedral from
the Meadows’

Yes, it is art because it is a depiction of an area within a field which has a cathedral and a horse carriage. This also, uses tone and shading and is a painting, with paint and some other art tools used.

Duchamp 1917:

‘Fountain’

Yes, in my opinion it is because someone has made this design of a urinal with graffiti on it and can be seen as art.

Jack Vettriano

Yes, this is a painting of two people walking together, it uses a lot of shading and some tone to show the details of the character and the shadow.
Mark Rothko 1955:

‘Yellow,
Orange,
Yellow, Light
Orange’

Yes, I consider this art because it is a painting of 3 block colours. It might be basic and simple but it still might be viewed as art as a lot of art starts with a simple look and slowly develops.
Damien Hirst 1991:

‘The
Physicality
of Death in
the Mind of
Someone
Living’

Yes, it is a paiper mâché of an shark in an aquarium tank. The shark has a lot of detail especially in its mouth and has a realistic look to it.

Nino Migliori 1954:

‘Tuffetore’

Yes, it is a photograph of a man diving into the water. It is because this photograph it complexed as the man it completely horizontal and some people may see it as art for that reason.

Gavin Turk 2004:

‘Pile’

Yes, it is a plastic trash bag made out of material. It looks very realistic and can also replace a black bag without notice.

3D Artist Research: Joel Erkkinen - Context

This is an artist named Joel Erkkinen has done this work on ArtStation. He has a varied amount of work on the site from Star Wars to Lego, and he tends to do a lot of his work on Maya, After Effects and Photoshop. The artist starts his work on Maya, then edits it with Photoshop and if needed he uses After Effects to add more detailed effects to the design. He has shown some of the Maya wire frames in his work and you can see the amount of detail that goes into the work that he produces.
In Maya Joel renders a lot of his work using Vray and mental ray to help give the work a lot of detail and depth as they are really good renderers. He adds some of the detail to the textures used in the work in Photoshop but other times in his work he doesn't use Photoshop at all but it produces the same quality of work.
